i love art. i specifically love art done in the arts & crafts style and folk art. keeping that in mind there are a lot of things i wish i could do. in some respects i am a bit more a dreamer than a doer. i don't think that my resistance to do comes from laziness but more from the fear of failing coupled with a lack of patience and the unrealistic idea that i should be able to do everything perfect on the first try. for example...i had always wanted to go to 'paint your pottery' and paint something. rita, always a friend in trying out new artsy ventures, agreed to go with me one saturday when i lived in boston. she picked out a teapot, i picked out a wine chiller. she had fun painting hers, i did not. she did not try to be perfect and therefore enjoyed herself, i did not. she loved her teapot, i hated my wine chiller.
i happened along a little table stuck in the corner last night before leaving vendor's night. i hadn't seen much that tickled my fancy at that point and had only made one purchase - a pair of fun earrings for myself. the table was covered in the cutest t-shirts of kids i have ever seen. they were made by a woman in balitmore and were being sold by her friend in NJ. awe and envy is how i felt browsing these shirts. it was one of those 'why didn't i think of this!?!?!' moments. i couldn't resist...i bought 3 for wil.
the woman sells her shirts on etsy.com which is one of my favorite websites. in browsing the site this morning i remembered exactly how much i love handmade stuff. i feel inspired - to do what i don't know - but i'll keep you posted. in the meantime, if you are looking for a gift, something fun for yourself or a little inspiration, check out etsy. i promise you won't be disappointed.

As the saying you goes, you never know til you try. Pick something up and go for it! You have an artists eye.
oh betsy - i so remember that day like it was just last week. I always felt bad and bummed you didn't enjoy it as much as i did. So much of my giddiness that day was that I was there, with you, a friend who loves art as much as i do but who also has an incredible artist's eye (right, Jess!). I was learning from you! That's the fun thing about art - some rules, but not a lot. It relfects who we are at that moment. I admire so much your eye for color, and your eye for placement (i.e. the placement of objects/gifts and color in your house to make it a home). You know I always tell you you're one of the most creative people i know! it comes natural to you and THAT to me is so cool. You go, girl, and let the tiger out of the cage!!
I am ecstatic you have the itch to try something. Can't wait to see what you decide. it'll be fantastic - that i know. :)

i am green with envy with this recent motivation on many areas that you have. i can't find it!!
for your itch, i'm thinking animals (something you love) & plants (your green thumb)...maybe animal painted terracotta pots with an herb planted in them. if your etsy site takes off, i'll take 10% of sales.
all: thanks for the constant encouragement. i would never be able to do it without you. also, yes, wil absolutely got a giraffe shirt. he also got the robot and a version of that christmas tree. sooo cute. i could've bought them all. ESPECIALLY the girl ones.
ps to rita: rita, i had such fun that day we painted pottery. the most fun part about it were the laughs we shared as i b*tched and moaned over the state of my wine chiller. and, yes, you did like it...so did ryan which is the only reason we kept it.
i'm glad, b....yeah - we did laugh a lot. only cuz you were so loving using that blow dryer, and cuz i was up & down like a jumping bean using mine, while singing to the really cool overhead music. that place allows you to bring alcoholic beverages while painting - maybe we should have tried that..at 11:00am? glad you kept your piece...when i see mine it always reminds of that day and makes me giggle.
